SIGNERS CHAPTER NEVADA SOCIETY SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
MEETING MINUTES - February 4 2012
A monthly meeting of the Signers Chapter of the Nevada Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NVSSAR) was held on February 4, 2012 at Denny's Restaurant, 3081 Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, Nevada. The meeting was called to order by President Anthony Perry
at 8:05 AM.
Present at the meeting were Compatriots Rev. Anthony Perry, Frank Gagliardi, William Schmidt, Gene Butler, John Harney, Jr., Leonard Becker, Aryen Perry, Ben Allen, C. Thomas Deishley, David Gagliardi, James Graver, Don Hotchkiss, William Jones, Charles Leonard, Charles Musser, Charles Recker, and Dennis Simmons. Also present were guests Em Becker, Edna Duvall, Joyce Duvall, Mary Gafford, and Carol Gagliardi.
President Perry presented an SAR Color Guard lapel pin to Signers Chapter Color Guard Commander Don Hotchkiss. Other Color Guard members had previously received pins. He also noted that the Color Guard presented the colors on January 11, 2012 at the American Beekeeping Federation's annual conference held at the Rio Hotel. The Federation recognized the services of the Color Guard by making a $100 donation.
President Perry recognized a gift to the Signers Chapter from Edna and Joyce Duvall. The gift was presented in memory of Compatriot Fredrick Duvall.
The minutes of the previous meeting, as prepared by Secretary Butler and distributed to the membership online by Compatriot Bill Schmidt, were approved unanimously as a result of a motion made by Compatriot Jones that was seconded by Compatriot Graver.
Treasurer Harney reported a 12/31/2011 balance of $4940.96 in the Chapter's general fund and an 11/30/11 balance of $7502.90 in the Schick Scholarship fund. The Treasurer's report was approved unanimously as a result of a motion by Compatriot Graver that was seconded by Compatriot Jones.
Compatriot Allen reported that the Signers Chapter's reconciled membership report to SAR headquarters showed that the Chapter had 111 members at the end of 2011. This was a net increase of 3 from 2010 which ended with 108 members. All those who helped contact members and encouraged them to maintain membership were thanked. When the reconciliation period started, there was a significant number of members who had not yet paid for 2012. Due to the efforts of Compatriots Allen, Boughton, and others who personally contacted members who had not yet paid dues, our retention was much better than initially indicated. Compatriot Allen will have an expanded report in March. Compatriot Allen also reported the January 25, 2012 death of Signers Chapter member David Hanson.
ROTC Chair John Harney, Jr. reported that ROTC medals had been purchased and we will need coverage at 18 high schools and two university programs. He is working on gathering the dates for the ROTC awards programs at the high schools and at UNLV. UNLV award programs are usually in April and high school programs are usually in May. When the list is established he will be recruiting presenters for each of the programs. More information will be forthcoming.
Compatriot Simmons asked about selection criteria for awarding SAR ROTC medals. Compatriot Harney stated the final selection is left to the individual programs. Program leaders are provided with the guidelines and they select the student who best exemplifies those guidelines.
President Perry stated that the Awards Committee is considering nominees for the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal. Information on nominees will be presented at the March meeting.
The NVSSAR will hold its annual meeting at John Ascuaga's Resort and Spa in Sparks, Nevada on Saturday March 24, 2012. Interested members are welcome to attend. Information on the meeting has been disseminated via email thanks to Compatriot Schmidt. At this time Compatriots Butler, Harney, and Perry have stated they will be attending.
Compatriot Jones asked the members present to remember our server Linda and to remember the hat fund that supports the scholarship fund.
The SAR closing was recited and the meeting was adjourned by President Perry at 8:40 AM.
The next meeting will be March 3, 2012
Respectfully submitted,
Gene Butler, Signers Chapter Secretary
